Free download The Water Thief 105 review ✓ PDF, eBook or Kindle ePUB free Õ Ben Pastor In 304 ce Aelius Spartianus officer and historian at the court of Diocletian in Dalmatia is writing the biographies of past Roman rulers including Hadrian who has been dead for nearly 175 years Aelius's particular charge is to investigate the unsolved mystery of the drowning death in the Nile of Hadrian's favorite young Antinous Soon his duty turns twofold the hunt for Antinous's grave supposed to conceal proof of a conspiracy against Rome and the murder of a wealthy army supplier and his servant The mystery thickens as deaths multiply; scholarly work turns into a race against time and into a confrontation with risk lies and half truths at the hands of priests authorities and former colleagues While the trials against Christians later known as the Great Persecution inflame Egypt Aelius gathers clues in odd p. The detective story has taken many odd forms over the years Since there are so many writers look for new twists ways to make theirs uniue and different Well this one fits thatThe Water Thief is the story of Aelius Spartianus veteran of the Roman Army in the year 304 He s been given the Emperor s blessing to write a history of Hadrian a past Emperor In the process of doing research Aelius finds hints that Hardian s beloved s death might not have been an accident This launches him on a bizarre combination of murder investigation and historical research with a side of what we d now call archeology When people around him start dying mysteriously it seems that whatever killed the Boy as he s known may still be lurking in the shadows Mystery and intrigue take Aelius from Egypt to Rome as he digs into the past It was a decent read although a few things kept throwing me off Aelius is attacked and nearly killed fairly early and doesn t really seem to care Not I must be on to something he just shrugs it off which seems like an odd reaction Some of the modern phrasing occasionally seemed weird in a book set so long agoI m not an expert on the period and I don t claim to be but did the Romans have to do lists shopping bags and for that matter windows If those are historically accurate some mention of that in a note somewhere would have been good as they seemed really jarring It s not a bad story by any means Recommended to fans of the Roman Empire different types of murder mysteries and historical fiction in general

The Water Thief

Free download The Water Thief 105 review ✓ PDF, eBook or Kindle ePUB free Õ Ben Pastor Laces until his road leads inescapably to Rome Joined in his search by a blind retired soldier who is well experienced in counterespionage Aelius scavenges for evidence in a world capital in decline From Rome his breathless trail takes him to Hadrian's country estate which is now acres and acres of monumental ruins in the wilderness In the haunted stillness of roofless halls and overgrown gardens Aelius deciphers the great plan of the villa an astronomical chart confirming how the danger against Rome is clear and imminent But who is behind it all How deadly close is danger In order to save the state and himself Aelius must solve not only the puzzle of Antinous's drowning but also the murders that have marred his path Internationally renowned and critically acclaimed author Ben Pastor brings her thematic skil. In this suspenseful and satisfying novel a Roman military officer pursues a centuries old mystery after being charged by Emperor Diocletian with writing a history of his predecessor Hadrian Aelius Spartianus a decent man and experienced soldier who has hopscotched all over the Empire fighting Rome s battles is in Egypt when he comes across a message hinting at danger to Rome that may be connected with the mysterious drowning death of Hadrian s favorite Antinous When he begins to investigate murders ensue The trail leads Aelius to Hadrian s estate near Tibur and to Rome where he eventually reasons out the truth amid bloodshed and treachery Pastor does such a great job of establishing credibility that I found myself musing as I read her fictitious evidence So that s what happened Though her solution to the mystery may be overly imaginative I ve given the novel five stars for its excellence in setting characterization and pacing THE WATER THIEF deserves to be better known to HF readers

I have to say that I was not impressed The main character seemed be constantly wandering around and it was hard to really follow the main theme of the book Most of the time I was just lost and distracted by the fact that it didn t seem like the people were speaking the way ancient Romans would ve spoken For a good historical fiction there should be of a sense of the time
